Week Ending July 26

Exeter captain IVAN MAUGER reported that he had been punched by a supporter in the pits at King’s Lynn. The incident followed a discussion between Mauger and the referee, Lew Stripp, in which he voiced suspicions that something had been added to his fuel. King’s Lynn general manager Martin Rogers refuted any suggestion that a member of the King’s Lynn staff would tamper with fuel. The spectator was restrained by a policeman.

Following success in the Continental Final over Poland, Czechoslovakia and West Germany, which put them into the final of the World Team Cup, four Soviet riders were preparing to make an equally strong challenge in the World Individual Championship. Valeri and Vladimir Gordeev, Viktor Kalmykov and Viktor Trofymov were set to contest the European Final at Bydgoszcz on August 24, when the 12 riders to join the British Final qualifiers from Coventry would be decided.

Leicester and England star DAVE JESSUP took a surprising 2-0 lead in the first leg of his Golden Helmet challenge against Ole Olsen at Wolverhampton. Olsen won the toss and took the inside gate in heat one but Jessup was ahead as the riders emerged from the first turn. In the second race, he was in the lead by the 30-yard marker. Despite the emphatic victory, Olsen felt he could pull it back in Jessup’s home leg at Leicester on July 29.

BOB PAULSON, retired Sheffield captain who had led his team to success in the Speedway Star Cup the previous season, was to be given a testimonial meeting in recognition of his service at Owlerton on August 10. Among star riders invited to take part were Bob Valentine, Nigel Boocock, Charlie Monk, Rick France, Graham Plant and Chris Pusey. Sheffield director John Carter said he was waiting for all acceptances to come in before he decided on the format for the meeting.
